A Lesson Learned

Where to begin???

Me: "I don't want to go with you to Mackay's scrimmage tonight.
I want to stay and play with Oliver."
Mom: "Okay.  Kenz is home if you need anything."

As Mom was pulling out of the garage she caught me breaking the rules
and getting on Oliver's Dirt Bike.
Mom: "Hayden!  You know the rules.  I'll take your Ipod."
Me: "Sorry Mom."

Mom wasn't here to see me so I put on Oliver's helmet and got on the Dirt Bike
- driving it myself.
I knew I was going to fast.
As I tried to turn the corner at the bottom of the hill I started to crash into a brick mailbox.
I'm my mind I said a swear word that starts with "S".

Seeing that both mom and dad's phones were ringing at the same time
with callers from the same family, Mom knew I was hurt.

Mom: "Do I have an injured child?"
Kristin M.: "Yep."
Mom: "How bad?"
Kristin: "He has bones sticking out."
Mom: "Have Kenz get him and meet me at the Fresh Market parking lot."

Mom DID say the "S" word out loud then cried.

Scott, Kristin, Mike J (a neighbor & pediatrician), and a bunch of others helped me.
They calmed me down & put paper towels around my hand.
They told me everyone would love me after this.
Mike told my dad to tell my mom to take me to Primary Children's Hospital.

Kenz drove me to my mom.
We all got into my mom's car and drove to the hospital.

Me: "I'm sorry Mom.  I'm so stupid."
Mom: "It's okay buddy.  Can you stay awake for me until we get to the hospital?"
Me: "Yes, but I don't want to talk."

A LOT OF PAIN & A LOT OF FEAR!

Kenzie said a prayer and my mom sang primary songs all the way to the hospital.
waiting in the waiting room.

My aunts Jenn & Manda came and my Grandpa Earl.

They rewrapped my fingers and gave me some pain medicine up my nose.
I wasn't so scared anymore.
Then it was time for Xrays.

My dad arrived.
He was stressed out because he thought he had lost his wallet.
The first doctor came and saw my hand.
She said we had to have an orthopedic surgeon come look at it because of the damage.

Damage:
compound fracture of right index finger.
tip of bone split and was out of the skin.
Degloved index finger and pinky
Lacerations to leg, fingers, and hand

Treatment:
remove index finger nail.
try to lay bone back inside and stitch down
stitch skin back into place and stitch fingernail back in place.
pack 2 middle fingers.
stitch skin on pinky back and place a new metal nail.
Clean up lacerations on legs.

Hearing what they were going to do, I started to cry.
I wanted to be put to sleep.
My parents were glad that they were going to try to fix me in the ER instead of OR
but I still wanted to go to sleep.
My mom asked the doctors and they said yes.
They started an IV in my other hand.
I cried a little but was brave since my mom was singing to me again.

I woke up during the surgery.
I needed to go to the bathroom.
I don't remember it all very well but my dad helped me go to the bathroom
all while to surgeon was fixing my hand.
I was embarrassed and worried all the doctors saw my private parts.
(Mom's note: there were 5 doctors working on him
and he kept them all laughing... that's for sure.)

Waking up and feeling sick.

Waiting for the antibiotic to finish in my IV.

All fixed and ready to go home.
We left the hospital at 2 am.
My mom and dad stopped to get me my medicines at Walgreens.
I thought I was going to barf in the parking lot but my mom helped me.

I cried most of the night because my hand hurt.
I kept crying and asking my mom,
"Why did I ever try to drive that motorcycle?
Why did I have to crash?"

My stitches will come out on September 18th.
I missed school on Thursday and Friday.
I laid around both days.
I was scared to bump my hand.
It felt better when it was laying on a pillow with ice.
It's my RIGHT hand so it is making little things very hard to do.

I have learned my lesson,
I will never ride on a dirt bike again!!

On a side note: my dad found his wallet and when my sister drove my mom's car home at midnight she crashed into our garage freezer and fri
